Do Something, Anything!
Written By: Miss Ashley D.
Life is consistently presenting us with choices. And if all the multitude of decisions life hands us for free is not enough, we’ve also been granted quite the knack for creating our own. For leaving things open. Allowing ourselves option. We leave strings untied, buttons undone; the teeth of zippers left spread wide on slacked jaws.
What we all too often forget to consider though, is that everyone else is doing the same. There are six billion other souls falling and tripping over our untied shoes. Our words left unsaid. They are all trying, hard as they might, to hold on tight. To be confident in the choices they have made.
We forget about their high wire balancing act. We forget about the risks they take. The places they go. The thoughts they have.
We also forget about the nets below them.
We forget that they have lives. That they have a whole world, a whole God damned universe, of things we can’t possibly imagine. There exist feelings and memories and desires. Nights full of private passion. Truths left unseen. Confessions never uttered. There’s a tendency to fail to remember that they are hurtling through space just as fast. They too are defying the rapidly ticking hands of time at every chance they get.
Yes. There are 6.7 billion other people! People all striving, all reaching. Billions. There are billions of human beings all discovering, all experiencing, and all rapidly growing independently from ourselves.
Many out there are winning prizes; raking in the dough. They are falling in love. They are breaking hearts and taking names. Billions. Billions of people all trying to rise on up! To shed a little light and to find a little more. There are billions of people rinsing salted wounds, facing their worst nightmares. They are cooking dinners. They are washing clothes. They are nursing rum and Cokes. They are having their way with their secretaries. Paying for tennis lessons and receiving multiple orgasms instead. They are eating Tex-Mex on a Tuesday night. Each of them examining their sordid lives; rearranging all the pieces, wondering the same as you and I, if it is ever going to make any sense.
Or if they should just surrender. Trade the beaten path for the golden road. Settle for the straight and narrow. Submit before a life of easy answers; on their knees and begging for more.
I for one do not wish to cower before the senseless. I do not wish to turn my back on divinity. I do not wish to trade a stroke of genius for a handbag; a tango with destiny for an office with a view. And I most certainly do not want to give up beauty for perfection.
I know I’m taking the long way.
I know I’m long winded.
I know I still stop just to see the sights.
Because I choose to.
This life is strange and beautiful. And we are all living it. All connected. We are all maneuvering through the same fabric and all getting tangled up in the same web. Yet we constantly, if not insistently, forget how much our lives affect those around us; how much even the slightest incident causes and incredible change. Within not only us but the billions of others all synced up on the same vibration.
I find it much easier to make sense of the madness when I determine my success on enjoyment as opposed to outcome. I simply find myself to be happier running with scissors, leaving my shoes untied, and the buttons of tidy blouses left wide open exposing softness, strength, and vitality.
I find playing with the proverbial fire to be quite cathartic. Sometimes getting burned is what it takes to create a little inspiration, to get fired up, to invigorate your senses, to set the neocortex a-buzzing. To remind you just where it was you were headed and what it was that you were hoping to find there.
Ladies, I encourage you to untie your shoes and undo your buttons. I urge you to embrace the open fly, to throw caution to the wind in pursuit of a life without limits, a life full of choices primed and waiting for your touch. Few things about our lives and the lives we share with others are ever given or received wrapped up in fancy paper with satin bows; the loose ends are the reason we keep striving. The loose ends are the purpose of evolving.
We are all here today, gone tomorrow, and the world just keeps on turning. Only we can decide where we go, what we accomplish, and how we are remembered. I dare you all to be a little bit more mischievous, mysterious, and memorable.
I double dog dare you to take a risk and strive to find an unending joy in your most unexpected conquests.
I triple dog dare you to take a risk and strive to find satisfaction in even your failures.
